Fisheries

Fisheries play a significant role in the economic and nutritional landscape of the Mising Autonomous Council (MAC). Situated in a region abundant with rivers, lakes and ponds, fisheries form an essential part of the livelihoods of the Mising community. The MAC promotes sustainable aquaculture practices to harness the rich aquatic resources available in the region. Local fishermen engage in both traditional and modern fishing techniques to harvest a variety of freshwater fish species, including Rohu, Catla and Hilsa.

Fish farming, particularly of indigenous species, is also encouraged to enhance productivity and ensure food security. The MAC provides support for the development of fisheries infrastructure, such as the construction of fish ponds, installation of fish cages and provision of technical assistance for fish breeding and hatchery management.

Key Initiatives

  • Construction of fish ponds and installation of fish cages.
  • Technical assistance for fish breeding, hatchery management and water quality control.
  • Training programmes on sustainable fishing practices.
  • Support for indigenous fish species conservation.
  • Awareness campaigns on aquatic ecosystem stewardship.

Way Forward

Through these initiatives, the MAC aims to enhance livelihoods, improve nutrition and conserve the aquatic biodiversity of the region. Training programmes and awareness campaigns on sustainable fishing practices are conducted to promote responsible stewardship of aquatic ecosystems.
